Apple to add Proximity Sensor inside “Dynamic Island” in Upcoming iPhone 15 Series

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple will integrate the proximity sensor inside the “Dynamic Island” area in the upcoming iPhone 15 series.

Proximity Sensor Inside Dynamic Island Area

The said Dynamic Island area is the pill and hole cutouts at the top of the display.

This seems to be different from the iPhone 14 as it has a proximity sensor located under the display.

Here the proximity sensor comes handy in detecting when the user holds the phone up to their ear and shuts off the screen.

So as per this latest revelation, all the iPhone 15 models will have a dynamic island design similar to the iPhone 14 Pro.

Only difference is that the proximity sensor in the iPhone 15 series will be placed inside the dynamic island with almost no change in its size.

So the Finisar, which is now owned by Coherent/II-VI, will switch to supplying 940nm wavelength proximity sensors (compared to 1380 nm for the iPhone 14 Pro) due to this change, as per the Ming-Chi Kuo tweet.

Reportedly, this new placement of the proximity sensor is expected to bring in the added convenience to iPhone users.

Further, display analyst Ross Young said that Apple will reportedly not bring the under-display Face ID feature to an iPhone until 2025 or later due to technical issues.

Most likely, this feature will arrive at the earliest on the iPhone 17 Pro.

New Changes In Horizon

In another development, a report hinted that iPhone 15 series will have dynamic island, not just the Pro models.

This was deduced by the leaked prototypes of the iPhone 15, 15 Plus, Pro, and Pro Max which seem to carry identical notch that is likely to expand thanks to the software optimisation done in iOS since its addition last year.

While sharing this positive update, the report mentions that the vanilla iPhone 15 and the 15 Plus are unlikely to feature a ProMotion display, instead having the standard 60Hz refresh rate screen.

It seems that these two models will also miss out on the Always-On Display feature as Apple will continue with this ploy of using older A-series chips with the non-Pro models in 2023 as well.

All in all, the major difference is going to be in the build materials as the iPhone maker is tipped to be using titanium frame for the Pro models rather than the stainless steel finish.

This move will surely help the company to trim the size and weight of the Pro models, which is also the need of the hour.
